Prior to shipping, all our boards are conditioned with Walrus Oil® Cutting Board Oil and sealed with Walrus Oil® Wood Wax. Not only are both products are a 100% food-contact safe, VOC-free, dye-free but they are also made right here in the US.
Your board will arrive with a set of "How to Maintain Your Cutting Board with Walrus Oil®" instructions. You will also have the option to select either a 2 oz starter sample of Walrus Oil® Cutting Board Oil or a .75 oz starter sample of Walrus Oil® Wood Wax to arrive with your product. Our boards with wood require proper maintenance to last, as they can dry out, crack, and even develop mold without regular care.
All of our items are hand wash only and not dishwasher safe. Heat from the dishwasher will not only ruin your item but potentially your dishwasher as well.
Special care is required for your board to maintain its beauty.
Avoid using alcohol, ammonia, bleach, chemical-based cleaners, rubbing alcohol, abrasives, or scrubs. Some of these chemicals are not safe for human use, may not be suitable for wood, and could potentially cause unintended allergic reactions.
Clean your board by wiping it with hot, soapy water, then rinse with hot water only. Dry it immediately with a clean dish towel or lint-free cloth. Store the cutting board upright in a dry area.
To disinfect and deodorize your board, keep a spray bottle of vinegar on hand. White vinegar, which contains acetic acid, is an effective disinfectant against E. coli, Salmonella, and other household bacteria. Simply spray the vinegar on the cutting board, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it off with a clean, damp cloth.
Avoid soaking the board in water, as it can cause the wood to expand, leading to warping, bending, and cracking. Additionally, too much soap can dry out the wood.
DO:
DON'T:
Just as our skin needs moisturizer to stay soft and healthy, wood needs oil to remain strong and vibrant. Frequent washing removes the wood's natural oils, making it susceptible to splitting and warping. You can tell when the wood needs oiling by looking at the color of the wood; the duller the brown, the drier the wood.
Avoid using vegetable oil or olive oil, as they can turn rancid and develop an unpleasant odor!
Do not use canola oil, coconut oil (refined, virgin, or non-processed), linseed oil, tung oil, varnish, vegetable oil, or walnut oil.
We recommend using Walrus Oil® Cutting Board Oil and Wood Wax to maintain your board. These products are available for purchase in our store; see the link below.
These pieces are primarily designed for display and serving. While it's fine to cut on the wooden portions, it is not recommended to avoid cutting on the epoxy resin artwork. Doing so can dull your knife and scratch the design. You can, however, use a dull knife for cheeses and spreads. Handle the board gently and avoid cutting directly on the resin surface to prevent damage. Remember, your board is one of a kind!
